Drawing of the western end of the Erie Canal at Buffalo, looking westward down Commercial Slip, 1827. You can see the tall masts of ships as they wait at anchor for goods to be transferred to and from canal boats for the next leg of the journey. Drawn by Captain Basil Hall, an Englishman, in 1827. Hall used a camera lucida to create this image. The camera lucida is a device that lets the operator create a tracing of an actual scene. In the days before the invention of photography, using a camera lucida was the best way to capture an image.
