Suggested Teaching Instructions

Have students analyze each box in the photograph. You can have all students analyze all the boxes or assign one color box to different students. Ask them how the people in the photograph are getting from one place to another.

This picture was taken around 190o in front of the New York Public Library. We have zoomed in on the activity on the street in front of the library to focus the students' attention. The main idea of this lesson is to see that one form of transportation does not suddenly end and a new one takes over. Many forms of transportation exist at the same time and older technology eventually becomes obsolete.
