Description

This photograph was taken on the Delhi/Meredith town line on what is now Route 28. It was published in the August 18, 1939 Oneonta Daily Star with the following caption: "The first Delaware county arrest for milk strike activities was made less than a minute after this picture was snapped yesterday on the Delhi-Franklin highway near the Delhi corporation line. Pickets are seen attempt to stop a truck, driven through the lines at high speed by Herbert Sutherland of West Delhi. Man in center of road with stick narrowly escaped being run over as he waited until the last moment to jump aside. Picket Earl Smith, at extreme left, has stone in right hand which he allegedly hurled at the truck as it passed. In the background, following the truck, is a sedan loaded with special deputies, one of whom, Walter Middlemast, promptly arrested Smith for disorderly conduct, and hustled him off to Delhi."
