Description

An Address to the Three Thousand Colored citizens of New-York who are the Owners of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Acres of Land, in the State of New-York, Given to them by Gerrit Smith, Esq. of Peterboro, New York. Gerrit Smith provided land grants to African Americans after New York State passed a law requiring African American men to posses at least $250 of real estate in order to vote. Gerrit Smith divided his 120,000 acres into 40 acre parcel to give out to African American families to live and farm on. This item was added as part of the Diversity and Collaborative Knowledge Program funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
