Cartouche or cartoon drawn by draftsman, David Vaughan, c. 1845. Vaughan, an Irish immigrant, was employed by the state's canal department. He often appended his own social comments to his maps by adding cartoons. This one depicts a miller from Rochester making a political statement, referred to as, "Stumping it." The miller explains he is for a "speedy enlargement." The enlargement entailed widening and deepening for the canal. This was very attractive to business people who used the canal to transport products to markets in the Midwest and on the eastern seaboard.
