United States certificate of naturalization for Russian Jewish immigrant Samuel Schackman, his wife, and his 6 children. Lists Samuel Schackman, age 38, his wife Lena, also 38, and children: Harold, 19; David, 16; Nathan, 15; Bernhard, 12; Ruth, 7; and Barnett, 6. At document's printing, family lived at 507 Howard Avenue, Brooklyn. Long Island’s population was enriched by increasing numbers of immigrants in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, arriving in New York from Italy, Russia, Poland, and other parts of Europe. The naturalization document and photographs explore the experience of the Schackman and Barish families, Russian Jewish immigrants who followed the path that many others traveled, from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Brooklyn to points further east. Eventually, the Barish family was centered around Freeport, and the Schackmans lived in Riverhead. The last photograph of the Schackman family reunion in Riverhead, was taken on the 30th anniversary of the Schackman family's naturalization.
