Description

The “Treaty Calico” series consists of 4 framed watercolors with beadwork, created by Dawn Dark Mountain (Oneida Nation, WI) between 2013-2016. The watercolor paper itself is manipulated with actual folds and watercolor paint is used to create the illusion of folds, to simulate the texture and drape of muslin cloth. As part of the agreements settled in the Treaty of Canandaigua (1794), the U.S. provides bolts of muslin cloth to the Six Nations each year in on-going recognition of the treaty. Dawn has also delicately written articles of the treaty amidst the foliage of each watercolor and the beadwork centered in each framed piece-strawberry, green bean, corn, and squash-alludes to the Haudenosaunee ceremonial calendar year.
