Drawing of the western end of the Erie Canal at Buffalo, looking northwest, 1827. The bridge in the distance carries the road that eventually became Erie Street. Drawn by Captain Basil Hall, an Englishman, in 1827. Hall used a camera lucida to create this image. The camera lucida is a device that lets the operator create a tracing of an actual scene. In the days before the invention of photography, using a camera lucida was the best way to capture an image.
