Description
Autograph document, signed, is a short tract about America's excellence in the fields of trade, agriculture, arts, and sciences. It also addresses the need for the free dissemination of knowledge and an informed citizenry in order to have a thriving democracy. Tompkins concludes the tract with lines from the poem, "A letter from Italy," by Joseph Addison. A folded panel of the manuscript also contains writing in Tompkins hand, but it is only partially legible because a piece of the page is missing.
