The business was operated Jewish businessman Nathan Oppenheimer, whose family lived on the second floor of this building. After his death in 1920, the business was passed down to his eldest son Alfred. In 1938, as antisemitism rose in Nazi Germany, Alfred sold the business in hopes that he would be able to escape with his family. However, despite their attempts to emigrate, in June of 1942 the Oppenheimer family was sent to Sobibór Extermination Camp.
