Description

The building plan of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, from Sir Banister Fletcher's A History of Architecture. The map shows the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Theatre of Dionysos (Dionysus), the statue of Athena Promachos, and the Temple of Nike Apteros, among others. The Propylaea were giant gateways made of marble and limestone that guarded the entrance to the Acropolis. The Temple of Nike Apteros, also known as Athena Nike, was constructed in 420 BCE over previously existing temple. See also slides A7529, A7539, and A7522, (1897).
