An elevated view of Rio de Janeiro’s Rio Brance Avenue towards the harbor. A busy, tree-lined street is in the center of the picture. Numerous tall buildings are visible, including what appear to be several churches. Sugarloaf and several other mountains are seen in the background. Sugarloaf is one of several similar mountains that surround Rio de Janeiro. The mountain’s name is said to be derived from its resemblance to a pile of freshly refined sugar; it is also possible that the name (Pão de Açúcar in Portuguese) is simply a poorly translated form of the native Pau-nh-acuqua, or “high hill,” (1935).
