Description

Saturday market at Carioca Viaduct in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Patrons walk around the covered stalls looking at various goods. Clothing, hats, and numerous other commodities are visible at the stalls, which are set up beneath stone arches. The Carioca Viaduct, or Arcos da Lapa, was constructed in 1750 to bring water from the Carioca River to the center of Rio de Janeiro. Built out of granite, bricks, and limestone-based cement, the aqueduct is 800 feet long and contains two levels of arches, 42 in total. The top of the structure was converted into the main route of Rio’s tram system, the Santa Teresa Tram, (1934).
