Original black and white photograph of the Schackman family reunion in Riverhead, 1947. The photograph documents the 30th anniversary of the Schackman family's naturalization (a Russian Jewish family that moved from the Lower East Side to Brooklyn and then out to Riverhead). Long Island’s population was enriched by increasing numbers of immigrants in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, arriving in New York from Italy, Russia, Poland, and other parts of Europe. The naturalization document and photographs explore the experience of the Schackman and Barish families, Russian Jewish immigrants who followed the path that many others traveled, from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Brooklyn to points further east. Eventually, the Barish family was centered around Freeport, and the Schackmans lived in Riverhead. The last photograph of the Schackman family reunion in Riverhead, was taken on the 30th anniversary of the Schackman family's naturalization.
