Description
Federal Writer's Project New York City Unit report in 1939 documenting several Spanish-American societies serving a variety of Hispanic and Latino communities in New York City. Organizations described in the report include the Department of Hispanic American Research of the American Geographical Society of New York, the Pan American Society, the Heye Foundation of the Museum of the American Indian, the Centro Mexicano and the Logia Hispana de Elks de Nueva York (Spanish Lodge of New York Elks). Spanish-American organizations served numerous purposes, from social and recreational diversions to educational opportunity and economic support. Reporters note that "The depression has caused many Spaniards to return to their native country, and the membership of a few Spanish clubs and societies in New York is greatly reduced today."
