Description

Business street in Hong Kong with people walking. Bamboo is extensively used to prop up buildings. There are street signs are written in Chinese, including one with a picture advertising shoes. People on the street are wearing both western and traditional dress. A rickshaw is visible in the street, picking up a customer. Britain took control of Hong Kong in 1841 after defeating China in the First Opium War, and it quickly became an important entry port for goods. Hong Kong was given back to the People’s Republic of China in 1997, but will maintain its political and economic autonomy until 2047, (1924).
