Woman at the fence of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego, New York. This facility was a safe haven for 982 refugees from 18 different countries during the Second World War. However, despite the security provided by the camp, the fence remains a powerful symbol of the confinement that also came with Fort Ontario. The complex relationship of the Jewish refugees with this camp that simultaneously saved and imprisoned them is explored in the operetta "The Golden Cage."
