Invisible ink had been used for centuries, but the British knew how to detect it. Luckily, John Jay’s brother James invented a brand-new kind of invisible ink for the Americans – one that the British knew nothing about. Combined with their “Culper Code,” Robert and the rest of the spy ring were successfully able to convey vital information to George Washington.
