Now What?

Liss was home, but her status as a free woman was anything but assured. With no papers to affirm her status as slave or free, she existed in a kind of in-between place. The complicated laws governing manumission as well as the challenging legal wranglings involved in hammering out a national Constitution left the matter of slavery as a deep and unresolved divide.
