Slavery and Freedom in New York

As slavery grew in New York, so too did the laws surrounding it that limited and oppressed people that were treated as property. In fact, in the 18th century, New York had more slaves than all other northern colonies combined, and even more than the colony of Georgia. The laws that dictated terms of ownership and legal punishments created unimaginable conditions for many African Americans.
