Eye of the Storm      

In late August of 1776, British troops out-numbered and out-maneuvered American forces in the Battle of Long Island, one of the most devastating battles of the early years of the war. Samuel Townsend, serving as a messenger while the armies clashed in Brooklyn, carried the terrible news to General Woodhull that George Washington was withdrawing his troops and evacuating Long Island.
