Tips for Implementation

Cautions and Considerations

  • Stress that the Thanksgiving Address is a specific practice of the Haudenosaunee and should not be generalized to all Native Americans.
  • Clarify that this Address is unrelated to the 1621 colonial Thanksgiving feast. It is a daily acknowledgement, not an annual holiday tradition. While the colonial holiday is a singular event on a calendar, the Address is a protocol for starting any significant endeavor ‘with one mind.’
  • When discussing the Haudenosaunee, emphasize the autonomy and distinctiveness of the Six Nations today.
