Document G: Evian Conference Political Cartoon

Political Cartoon Evian Conference

Political cartoon by Sidney 'George' Strube, entitled, "Will the Evian Conference guide him to freedom?" that was published in the Sunday, July 3, 1938 edition of The New York Times.

Discussion Questions

1. Examine the symbols and words in the cartoon. What do they convey about the cartoonist's answer to the question posed in the title?

2. Why do you think Strube incorporated the Nazi symbol of the swastika? What does it indicate about the response from all four corners of the globe to the suffering of Jews?

3. Did the cartoonist view the conference as a success or failure? How does he show his perspective?

4. Can you draw any parallels to refugee issues of today?
